Moxibustion

What is moxibustion?
Moxibustion is a therapy intended to recover ill body and to promote longevity in the manner of putting finely refined wormwood (artemisia) on a certain region of our body and burning it.

The reasons why wormowood is used include:

1) Wormwood is easily available anywhere throughout the country (Korea).
2) Wormwood is a familiar food to Korean people to the extent that it is said even in Dangun mythology. Additionally, it promotes digestion, activates blood circulation to warm up the body, and improves the functions of the uterus and genital organs.
3) Since wormwood comes out in early spring when Yang (positive) starts, it has flourishing Yin (negative) energy related closely to skin or flesh. Thus, dislike other kinds of plant, moxibustion with wormwood never cause aggravation or festering. Especially, the wormwood growing up in islands containing the vigor of sea (Gangwha Island Wormwood) is considered the best in this light. (Sea corresponds to Yin (negative) compared to Earth.)

The three ways to apply moxibustion are:

1) Direct moxibustion : Make rice grain-sized moxa, put it directly on the skin and cauterize the region with moxa and burning incense. This is strongly effective but has the disadvantages of severely hot feeling and scar.
2) Indirect moxibustion : ?Instead of putting moxa directly on the skin, put moxa on sliced ginger or garlic or spread-out salt situated on the skin.
This is less effective but appropriate for women with interest in aesthetics or children.
3) Tobacco moxibustion : Slowly make tobacco approach a desired spot to be cauterized, and withdraw it as soon as the affected person feels hot. This is intended to deliver warmth simply to the body, but so convenient in daily life.

 Efficacy and Effectiveness of Moxibustion
1) Moxibustion warms up the body. As if water is frozen at a cold temperature and turns into ice, the functions of the five viscera and the six entrails in our body are frozen when it is cold. In this case, moxibustion can lead to activating such the functions.
2) It promotes circulation. Vitality involves vigorous activity. So, if you receive moxibustion, you can experience substantially the great vitality of yourself.
3) It strengthens body and soul. Similarly to tempering iron, bearing the pain caused by moxibustion strengthens our body and soul.
4) It is helpful for longevity and healthy lifetime. Regular or frequency moxibustion ensures longevity with the higher quality of life. As mentioned previously, moxibustion warms up the body, promotes the circulation of vital energy and blood and ultimately contributes to the quality of life and longevity. In this light, therefore, appropriate diseases to apply moxibustion are summarized as follows:

First, the regions to be kept the warmest in our body include digestive organs, uterus and bladder. Because the digestive organs should be kept at 42 to 43℃ in order to digest normally foods (refer to the normal body temperature of 36.5℃); the uterus protects directly the fetus, and the bladder is closely associated with discharging urine. Thus, important acupuncture points include Zhong wan (in the middle of the solar plexus and the umbilicus), Tian shu and Guan yuan acupoints for digestive diseases, Guan yuan and Zhong ii acupoints for uterine diseases and Zhong ji acupoint for bladder diseases.

Second, as moxibustion promotes the circulation of vital energy and blood, it is effective against neuralgia or benumbed and painful extremities. Especially, in the case who has pins and needles in his/her legs, cauterizing Qu chi acupoint in the arms and Zu san li acupoint in the legs is highly effective.

Third, moxibustion may strengthen the body. The points to reinforce the inborn physical strength (stamina) and simultaneously sexual capacity are Guan yuan and Zu san li acupoints. The point to strengthen the brain function to the extent that it can prevent brain dysfunction and senile dementia in the elderly is Baihui (GV20).

Finally, typical longevity acupoints include Zhong wan, Wuan yuan and Zu san li. After the forties, it is recommended to apply moxibustion to Baihui acupoint from time to time.

 Moxibustion procedures
1. Make rice grain-sized moxa
2. As it is difficult to fix moxa on acupoints, moisten slightly the bottom of moxa with saliva.
3. Cauterize the point with burning incense. At this moment, be careful not for incense to adhere to moxa.
4. Once burning has been finished, disperse the ash by rubbing it with your hands (the procedures so far regarded as a session). Then, apply moxibustion to the same point again. Applying moxibustion once and twice are called one session and two sessions, respectively.

 Cautions in moxibustion
1) Usually, it is desirable to apply moxibustion at night. For poor physical strength, three sessions of moxibustion is suitable. When physical strength gets better, five sessions or up to seven sessions are applicable.
2) The time required for the effects to appear apparently is at least two weeks or up to six weeks. Thus, constant and regular application is necessary on a daily basis.
3) Rarely, some blisters may occur in the affected region. It is allowed to apply moxibustion on small and slight blisters. However, for large and severe blisters, break and disinfect them, and after several days, apply moxibustion on the region again.
4) Avoid moxibustion around one hour before and after bathing, at the period of menstruation, and during pregnancy.
5) To apply moxibustion to multiple acupoints at the same time, first apply moxibustion to the upper part, and then to the lower part. Habitually, it is ideal to apply moxibustion to Zu san li acupoint at the last step.
6) While for ill cases, moxibustion is constantly and regularly applied until such illness is completely recovered, it is recommended to apply moxibustion once a month in spring and fall just for the sake of longevity without a certain illness.
7) Moxibution for a long time sometimes causes fatigue. In this case, it is recommended to take a rest for a few days or to eat good nutrition for better strength.
