Tourmaline

What is Tourmaline?
Characterized by various colors, tourmaline is one of highly interesting previous stones. It had been designated as the name of other previous stone until the modern mineralogy was established and advanced. In the mid 1500s, Portuguese expedition discovered an unknown green mineral in Brazil and called it emerald. Actually, it was green tourmaline.

In the late 1800s, Tiffany Company’s jewelry appraiser George Guntz introduced tourmaline into the American market. He was proud of its discovery in Maine and California and made its #118alues as jewel public. In the early 20th century, as tourmaline mine was found, the market supply increased significantly.

Most of the mined tourmaline was exported to China, however the Chinese market was blocked due to communization in the early 1990s. After that, tourmaline has been distributed again in China. Practical goods such as small sculptures or tobacco pipe have been made of tourmaline. Other countries also have high demand for this mineral, however the biggest market is China.

 Etymology of Tourmaline
Tourmaline is derived from ‘tormali’ meaning ‘composite jewel’ in Sinhalese language. As suggested by its name, it has various colors.
In fact, the colors of tourmaline are seen wider than in actuality and almost all levels of chromaticity. Thus, tourmaline expresses all kinds of colors given by God in the most colorful appearance.

 Miraculous Electric Properties of Tourmaline
If tourmaline is heated (at about 100℃), it has pyroelectricity indicating the ability to pull in dust. In the Netherlands, it is called aschentrekers and has been used to remove tobacco ashes from tobacco pipe by virtue of such the property.
This property explains why it pulls in dust while displayed under hot lightings. It is also characterized by piezoelectricity under pressure, although it is lower than quartz.

 Origins of Tourmaline
Most of tourmaline have been mined in Brazil, especially Minas Gerais and Bahia.
Other than the regions, its origins include Tanzania, Kenya, Madagascar, Namibia, Mozambique, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, U.S., Myanmar and India.

Tourmaline is useful for natural environment as well as human life and has various applications!
It dilates capillary vessels and has the advantages of promoting the circulation of blood, activating cells, metabolism and gastrointestinal movements, warming effect, fatigue and pain relief, and effectiveness against chloasma or leucorrhea.
Additionally, it functions as antioxidant and makes synergy with anions and far-infrared rays produced by 0.06A current. A study reported that if applied to the human body, it breaks down harmful free radicals known as the cause of aging, and alkalizes the body so that it greatly effective for headache relief, facial care and weight control!

Effects on water
- If tourmaline applies to water, the water turns into alkaline water!
- Additionally, the applied water becomes rich in minerals and loses the unique odor of chlorine which is a characteristic of tap water!

Effects on health
- It promotes the metabolism of body! (minus ions)
- It activates cellular functions and immunity, and has the benefits of blood purification and automatic nervous sedation!
- It turns into beneficial water for skin, especially in the aspect of moisturizing!

Environment improvement
- If applied to drains, the impurities in and the odor of the drains is significantly reduced!
- The applied water has higher washing capacity, and consequently the amount of detergent used remarkably decreases!
- It deodorizes pets and accelerates the growth of plant!
